Two tourist destinations in the Gorj county have received the title of European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) - a distinction given by the European Commission that rewards the best achievements in sustainable tourism in smaller destinations throughout Europe.

🏞 Tismana

Tismana is a renowned destination for gastronomic festivals:

The Meats Aspic Festival
A unique event in Romania, held in the Tismana area. Cold meats can be goose, fish, chicken, turkey, rooster, quail, pork, beef, game, rabbit, and are consumed with hot stuffed cabbage, polenta and hot pepper.

The Trout Festival
Held on the Annunciation holiday, March 25th, highlighting the offerings of the trout farms in the area. Fish, especially trout, is considered a traditional dish in wedding menus, and is usually served with polenta and mujdei.

The Chestnut Festival
The chestnut tree is the symbol of Tismana, its fruits being both food and medicine. As a food, they are mainly used to prepare sweets, and as medicine they are used to obtain medicinal wine, tincture, powder, teas, ointments. The festival takes place in early October.

The inhabitants here have occupations in agriculture, animal husbandry, beekeeping, fish farming, traditional crafts. Local economy products are marketed in a daily market in the local center and in the weekly animal market.

The Tismana Monastery is the most renowned cultural and religious site of the destination. It was founded by the Holy Father Nicodim from Tismana (1310-1406), to whom the choice of architectural style belongs. The brick construction was carried out with the support of rulers Radu Negru Voievod (1377-1383), Dan I (1384-1386) and Mircea cel Bătrân (1386-1418).

Thus, the impression left is that of a community of folk artists, for whom each object has a special purpose and significance, inherited from generations of the past.
