Novaci is a town in Gorj County, Oltenia, Romania, consisting of the component locality Novaci (residence), and the villages of Bercești, Hirișești, Pociovaliștea and Sitești. The Gilort river passes through Novaci.
The town of Novaci is declared a Resort of local interest. The inhabitants of the town still keep a large part of the traditions and deal with sheep. In general, the main activities of the inhabitants are in tourism, construction, education, agriculture.
Most of the older locals are originally from Sibiu. A long time ago (1386-1418) they had to cross the mountains with their families and flocks of sheep.
From Novaci you can reach the Rânca resort either on foot or by car, traveling 18 km on the road that connects Novaci to Rânca (Transalpina DN67c) through "Plaiul Novacilor".
The town of Novaci is located at the foot of the Parâng mountains, at a distance of 44 km from Târgu-Jiu and 80 km from Râmnicu Vâlcea, being watched from afar by the most towering peak of the Parâng massif, Parângul Mare. (2 518 m)
