About
The Popular School of Arts "Constantin Brancusi" Targu Jiu began its activity on October 1st, 1972, being founded by the decision no. 334 of September 22nd, 1972 of the Executive Committee of the Gorj County People's Council. In the first school year, the 242 students enrolled at the headquarters in Targu Jiu had as study disciplines: acting-theatre, theatre directing/brigades, photographic art, cinematographic art, folk dance, painting-graphic arts, theory and solfeggio, musical instruments (violin, accordion, wind instruments), and popular music singing. At the same time, external sections were established in the county in the localities of Cîlnic (ceramics), Godinești (cimbalom, accordion, violin), Peștișani (sculpture), Polovragi (flute and folk embroidery), and Stănești (flute).
Year after year, the number of disciplines studied increased, concomitantly with the increase in the number of external sections. For the 2016-2017 school year, the institution has courses organized for a total of 2,755 students, both at the central headquarters in Targu Jiu and at the 39 external sections, organized in just as many administrative-territorial units.
In addition to the main activity of instruction, the Popular School of Arts "Constantin Brancusi" Targu Jiu has had, since the beginning, an important role in the cultural and artistic activity of Targu Jiu and Gorj County. Starting in 2005, in addition to the institution, performance institutions were established that have become emblematic for the Popular School of Arts "Constantin Brancusi" Targu Jiu and Gorj County: the Folk Ensemble "Maria Lătărețu", the Puppet Theatre "Pinocchio", and the Chamber Orchestra "Lyra Gorjului
