About
Founded in 1984, the Târgu-Jiu Art Museum operates in its new location in the Central Park, since April 1993, not far from the well-known works of Constantin Brâncuși. This institution offers significant opportunities for rediscovering the eternal essences and values of our art.
Here, we can gather in complete silence in front of the hieratic elegance of Romanian icons whose age and artistic value is considerable.
One of the museum's halls houses remarkable watercolors by Ion Murariu, admirable charcoal, pencil and sepia studies by Vasile Blendea, Iosif Keber and Stefan Popescu as well as pastel successes by Mihai Teisanu, Alexandru Moscu and Corneliu Sever Mermeze.
In another hall of the museum, the oldest exhibits of the museum (17th century) can be admired, belonging to the Flemish and Italian schools. The 19th century is represented in the main exhibition by the academic portraits made by the Brașov painter Misu Popp.
The local spirit is represented in our museum by the works of the great Gorj artists Iosif Keber (easel and religious painting, occupying an entire hall) and Vasile Blendea (sculpture and painting). A series of painters, who have become classics of the Romanian artistic space, Gheorghe Petrascu, Nicolae Vermont, Henri Catargi, Aurel Jiquidi, Schweitzer Cumpana, Margareta Sterian, Alexandru Ciucurencu, are also present, through their works, in our museum.
The unmistakable works of great artistic density of the master Corneliu Baba invite us again to meditation.
Remarkable contemporary artists, Constantin Blendea, Ion Pacea, Vasile Grigore, Ion Salistreanu, Sorin Ionescu and Marin Gherasim, are present through significant works. From the same generation is also Rodica Popescu, an artist of enormous talent, unfortunately, very little known, from whose works our museum has a substantial donation.
The works of the slightly younger Vasile Talan, Sorin Dumitrescu, Semproniu Iclozan or Titu Dragutescu are also part of the museum's heritage.
From the current generation of Gorj artists, the present exhibition also includes some remarkable glass works by the well-known Mihai Topescu and Valer Neag.
The Târgu-Jiu Art Museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, art workshops and lectures, making it a cultural center open to the public.
