About

Located on the territory of Baia de Fier, Gorj county, only 50 km from Târgu-Jiu municipality and approximately 70 km from Râmnicu-Vâlcea, they are easily accessible by car, and the view you will enjoy is superb.

The scattered villages of Baia de Fier are located in the subcarpathian hilly area, at about 600-700 m above sea level. The depression climate is mild with mild winters and cool but rainy summers. The natural resources are represented by the iron ore present on the upper course of the Galbenul river, the limestone used in the manufacture of lime, the graphite from Catalinul mountain (considered, according to some sources, the purest graphite in Europe), stone, timber.

Cheile Galbenului is two kilometers long and not very narrow. However, the steep walls make them spectacular. Moreover, at the base of these walls, pits were formed, i.e. huge alignments of stones.

It is interesting that whether you want it or not, you will necessarily cross Cheile Galbenului on the way to the Muierilor Caves. And this is due to the two ways of access to the galleries: you enter by the parking lot next to the Muierilor Cave Hut and exit on the other side of the slope, after an 800 m road through the galleries. At the exit you can admire part of the gorge and the Galbenul river valley from the height; there is also a birch forest nearby.
