About

The Vaja – Clocotis lake complex is located on the Bistrita river in the south of the Vulcan Mountains near the Gureni locality (Pestișani commune). The geographical coordinates where this tourist attraction is located are the following: 45.151901 Lat.N and 23.014297 Long.E.

The Vaja - Clocotis lake string is part of the Cerna - Motru - Tismana hydropower complex, one of the most complex hydropower facilities in Romania.

The two anthropogenic lakes are built by damming the course of the Bistrita river, the first dam, the upstream ones being the Vaja dam, behind which Vaja Lake was formed. The Vaja Dam is a dam made of rock with a clay core, the lake having a water volume of approximately two million cubic meters. The Clocotiș dam is located downstream and is made of concrete in a simple arch, the volume of the resulting lake being five million cubic meters.

The water of the lakes is used for hydropower purposes, but water sports and sport fishing enthusiasts can enjoy the existence of this lustrous complex on Bistrita gorjeana.
