The Gorj County Museum "Alexandru Ştefulescu" includes collections of archaeology (prehistoric, Dacian and Roman era), medieval, modern and contemporary history, numismatic collection (Roman era), the Alexandru Ştefulescu collection (15th-19th century), old books, and icons.
The museum building is an eclectic monument, built in 1894 as the headquarters of the Prefecture, then court. Restored in 1977-1978, it became the headquarters of the county museum. The Gorj Museum was established on July 16, 1894 by a group of cultural figures led by historian Alexandru Ştefulescu, Professor Iuliu Moisil, painter Vitold Rolla Piekarski, and engineer Aurel Diaconovici.
The museum exhibits archaeology and history, from prehistory to 1918, numismatics (Roman era), the collection of Alexandru Ştefulescu, containing documents and manuscripts related to the history of Gorj beginning in the 15th century and old books.
