Piatra Sfinxul Lainici Nature Reserve

The Piatra Sfinxul Lainici Nature Reserve is a protected area of the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Gorj county. It is a natural and scenic geological reserve and administratively belongs to the Bumbești Jiu locality.

The Piatra Sfinxul Lainici Nature Reserve is part of the Defileul Jiului National Park and is located in the Lainici Pass, at the center of this park. The Lainici Pass begins in the south of the "General Ion Drăgălină" Monument and continues north, passing through the Lainici Tourist Stop, the Lainici Monastery, and the Lainici train station. This is the most famous pass on the Defileul Jiului, because in both World Wars, fierce fights took place here.
