About

The Cioaca with Brebenei Cave is located in the northeastern part of the Mehedinti Mountains, near the village of Closani. Access to the cave is via the road that climbs from the Closani Cave to the Piatra Mare peak of Closani.

The Cioaca with Brebenei Cave is a fossil, descending cave, it is warm (11 degrees Celsius) and has a valuable decoration of concretions (pure calcite crystals), and it is protected for this reason. It is a small cave, only 85 meters long. It starts with a 6-meter shaft and continues with a slope of rubble that leads to an elongated hall where, from the opposite side, another slope of limestone fragments falls from the ceiling.

Then, the final descending section twists the gallery westward and ends with massive calcite drippings, which have closed any possibility of continuation. The walls of the gallery and the limestone fragments on the floor of the hall are very richly decorated with coral-like formations. But in addition to these formations, an impressive and bizarre interweaving of delicate stalactites covers about 2 square meters of the ceiling of the last section of the underground hollow, giving the Cioaca with Brebenei Cave the status of a unique, distinguishing it from all other caves in our country."
