Closani Cave
Caves
About
The Closani Cave is located in the northern part of the Mehedinti Mountains (the village of Closani, Pades commune, Gorj county - near Baia de Arama), in the Jurassic-Cretaceous limestone triangle whose sides are formed by the Motru Mare and Motru Sec, and the base - the crest of the Pietrei Mari and Pietrei Mici of Closanilor.
The cave is easy to navigate, requires lighting and possibly protective equipment. However, being protected and partially arranged for biospeology and geophysics research, it can only be visited with the approval of the National Cave Administration and the Institute of Speleology and in the presence of a guide (the administrator of the Speleological Station at Closani, F. Argintaru).
It is a fossil cave consisting of two galleries with a length of 1100 m.
It is a warm cave (11.3°C in depth), very humid and without air currents.
In terms of genesis, recent research indicates that the Gallery with Water was carved by the waters of the Motru Mare Valley that used to flow through the Izvorale Valley, while the Matei Ghica Gallery was carved by those of the Motru Mare.

Due to the richness and variety of calcite formations, the Closani Cave is the most beautiful and, in many respects (such as crystallography or biospeology), the most interesting cave in the country.
