A Gorjean scientist for posterity, Ion Popescu-Voiteşti - the man who discovered salt and oil deposits, led the Geological Institute of Romania, laid the foundations of the Academy of Sciences and gave more than 140 speeches at geological congresses in the country and abroad.

Anyone who wants to get in touch with his life can visit the memorial house in Bălăneşti commune, located a few km from Târgu Jiu.

Ion Popescu Voiteşti devoted his entire life to the research of the structure of the Romanian land, from the analysis of the geological past discovering the way of sheltering the mineral wealth. Also, along with the tectonic synthesis of the Carpathians, the paleontological evolution of the Romanian land represented the most important part of his work.
