Martel Cave

About

It is carved into the base of the left slope of the Motrul Sec, in the Fata Pietricelei massif, at an altitude of 370 m above sea level and 1 m above the river. The initial opening of the cave was doubled by the collapse of a block, so currently there are two small entrances.

The cave is formed by a network of fossil, subfossil, and active horizontal corridors, totaling 2200 m in length. At the beginning, a slope of rocks is descended to a fork, then the left branch is continued westwards.

After descending a 5 m pit, the two branches merge and from here on, the corridor continues high and wide. During periods of heavy rain, the cave network is flooded by the Motrul Sec water, which penetrates at the ends of the two main corridors, as well as through the connecting holes with the active network.

The water exits the cave in clear state, but some stays inside and makes a large part of the gallery network inaccessible. This is why exploring this cave must be done during periods of extreme drought, when the flow of the Motrul Sec decreases greatly.
