About

The old bridge over the Jiu River, located in the capital of Gorj County, is on the list of historical monuments and is also known as the Ferdinand Bridge, as it was built between 1894 and 1895. Currently, the historic bridge is "cut" into five sections. Three sections are located between the Central Park and an island in the reservoir, while two sections are abandoned in the bushes. T

he city of Târgu Jiu, in collaboration with the Order of Architects of Romania, plans to organize a competition for ideas and solutions for the placement of the two sections of the old bridge and the renovation of the commemorative space at the end of the new bridge.

The support of the Ministry of Culture shows that things can work and encourages local authorities to make important efforts in the sustainable development of Târgu Jiu. All measures taken aim to lead to the effective management and development of heritage, and are important from the perspective of community involvement and awareness of the values of the ensemble, as stated on the sospatrimoniu.ro website.

The historic steel bridge was cut in 1994 when it was moved from its original location.

A concrete bridge with four lanes was built in its place and three sections of the "Ferdinand Bridge" were moved to the Central Park to connect to an island that appeared as a result of hydroelectric works.
